Jergenson, a freshman at Lipscomb University, was the state tournament MVP for Gallatin's Class AAA championship team last March. Last week doctors amputated both of Jergenson's legs below the knee, and yesterday she was still listed in critical condition at St. Thomas Hospital.

Lipscomb University has also started the Kaia Jergenson Medical Fund. "This will be for the family to use however they wish," Gallatin athletic director Steve Duke said. Gallatin girls basektball coach Kim Kendrick has been a regular visitor at St Thomas since Jergenson was hospitalized Jaa 4. "Sometimes we have to watch a game film from last year and to see Kaia running down the court is very difficult," Kendrick said. "Everyone from last year has been to see her, it was a very close team.

"Kaia will still overcome whatever it takes because she is a very strong person and not afraid of hard work. She will be surrounded by a wonderful family and friends to help and she'll still accomplish what she wants to in life." Gallatin hosts Smyrna tonight and Hendersonville Friday, both games beginning at 630 p.m. Blackmail's options: Football Coach David Alsup and principal 12 160 13.3 16 186 11.6 14 159 11.4 16 174 10.8 18 193 10.7 17 186 10.6 16 168 10.5 16 165 10.3 Jonath Samuels of Pearl-Cohn committed to Tennessee Tech. Samuels (5-11, 215) was a three-year starter as a linebacker for the Firebirds. Joni Deering of Macon County, last year's District 9-AA Softball Player of the Year, has signed with Vol State.

A pitcher, Deering had a 23-8 record last season Jimmy Stanfield, a catcher at Riverdale, has signed with Motlow State. Soccer going abroad: University School boys soccer coach Daniel Gordon will take teams representing Tennessee on four trips outside the country this summer. Included is the Gothia-Dana Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark, July 15-30, where the team will play 16 games. Cost is $1,800 for airfare, meals and accommodations. The other trips are to Jamaica, June 19-23 Nassau, Bahamas, June 26-30 ($1,100) and Trinidad, July 3-7 The past two years Gordon has taken a team from USN to Nassau, but wanted to expand it this year.

"The benefit is the kids is to play top teams internationally and learn about different cultures and often are able to develop a pen-pal relationship with other players around the world," Gordon said. Blackman will be eligible to compete for region and state championships in all sports except football for the 2000-2001 school year. But because football schedules in two-year contracts and next season is the second year, Black-man wouldn't be able to schedule enough games to play Division "We have two options, one is to play Division and maybe compete for a football state championship or play Division I where we wouldn't be eligible for a region or state championship," Alsup said. Division II would still have to accept Blackman if the school chose to pursue that.

In either case Alsup said Blackman wants to play as much of a varsity schedule as possible. Commitments: Scott Salmons of Smyrna committed yesterday to East Tennessee State. The Ten-nessean's All-Midstate punter, Salmons also plays wide receiver. Salmons averaged 44.7 yards per punt and in just seven games had 25 receptions for 661 yards and eight TDs. "When that happens there isn't a shot on the floor I don't like.

"You get into arguments about offense and defense. But defense isn't always about just how few points you allow. "When you win 110-100, you've scored 10 more points than you've given up." Cain has increased his scoring average 13 points last season to 29 per game. He is strongest creating opportunities to score and getting to the free throw line. McKee, whose average has increased from 10 last season to 23.6 points this season, has a catch-and- their defense.

They lead the SEC in scoring defense (57.5 points) and field goal percentage defense (38). And with high flyers like Chris Porter, they love to crash the offensive boards. "I'd say about 50 of his game is offensive rebounding," Yarbrough said. "If we eliminate that, I think we'll be all right" Victor will likely open the game defending Porter, whose scoring has come and gone this season Senior point guard Doc Robinson is the Tigers' leading scorer and also has the best assist-turnover ratio in the league. The Panthers are 10-8, but Trickey has big hopes for the future. "If they get down to business I think we can do as good as we want to," Trickey says. "One thing about being new, it takes about a year to get your system in place.

But what it takes is for them is to believe and I think they are starting to believe." 3 I'd much rather play this style." Trickey said he wants FRA taking 70-80 shots a game, making the Panthers resemble college teams like Loyola-Marymount and Oklahoma in the 1980s. It's the same approach Trickey's dad, Ken Trickey employed when he coached Middle Tennessee State from 1962-69 and Oral Roberts for two stints from 1969-74 and 1987-93. "I like to play fast, if the shot is there and the board is covered I want them shooting," Trickey said. III ill I. Jm UT: Auburn coming in angry ju Us Angeles Kings I PATRICK COTE.
